Adinkra is a cotton cloth produced in Ghana and C ô te d'Ivoire with the traditional Akon symbol printed on it. Adinkra symbols represent popular proverbs and maxims, record historical events, express specific attitudes or behaviors related to the characters depicted, or concepts uniquely related to abstract shapes.

Adinkra symbols are usually associated with proverbs, so they convey more meaning than a single word. Robert Sutherland Rattray compiled a list of 53 adinkra symbols in his book religion and art of Ashanti in 1927.
