30 Unique Taino Tattoos You Must Love

The Taino people are one of the main indigenous people in the Caribbean. Before the arrival of Europeans in the late 15th century, they were the main residents of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico in the Greater Antilles, the northern part of the Lesser Antilles and the Bahamas, where they were called lucayas (Lucayans), the Taino language they speak, belongs to one of the Arawakan languages.

The ancestors of the Taino people entered the Caribbean from South America. According to the contact time, Taino people are divided into three categories: West Taino people (Jamaica, most of Cuba, Bahamas); typical Taino people (Hispaniola and Puerto Rico); and East Taino people (Northern Lesser Antilles). There is a conflict between the Taino people and the Caribbean people in the southern Lesser Antilles. Due to the Colonial Massacre of the colonists, the Taino people and their culture have almost disappeared.
